Improve Teeth Alignment with Invisalign®

Understanding Invisalign® Clear Aligners

Invisalign® uses a series of custom-made, clear aligners designed to gradually move your teeth into better alignment. Each aligner is removable and virtually invisible, making teeth straightening more discreet than traditional braces. This system is designed to address various orthodontic concerns, including crooked teeth, gaps, crowding, and bite issues. Clear aligners are designed to shift teeth incrementally over time, and you can remove them for eating and cleaning, offering flexibility throughout your treatment.

How Invisalign® Works

Invisalign® treatment follows a structured process designed around your needs. Each patient receives a customised treatment plan based on the results of a comprehensive assessment and digital planning. Understanding the steps involved helps you prepare for your orthodontic treatment and know what to expect at each stage.

Initial Consultation and Assessment

During your first visit, we conduct a comprehensive oral examination to assess your teeth, gums, and jaw alignment. We discuss your smile goals and concerns about orthodontic treatment. Digital scans or impressions create an accurate model of your teeth. We assess whether Invisalign® is suitable for your case and answer your questions about the process.

Custom Treatment Plan

Using 3D digital planning technology, you can view a digital simulation showing projected tooth movement. However, actual results depend on individual response and consistent aligner wear. We provide an estimated treatment duration, ranging from several months to one or two years, and the number of aligners needed, depending on case complexity.

Receiving Your Aligners

Your custom aligners are manufactured according to your treatment plan. You receive your first several sets with detailed instructions on inserting and removing them properly. We provide guidance on wearing aligners approximately 20 to 22 hours per day. Care instructions help you maintain your aligners. We discuss what to expect during the first few days as you adjust.

Wearing Your Aligners

Wear your aligners for the recommended hours daily, removing them only for eating, drinking (except water), and oral hygiene. Approximately every one to two weeks, as directed, you will replace your aligners with the next set in the series. This gradual progression allows teeth to shift incrementally.

Regular Progress Check-ups

Appointments are scheduled approximately every six to eight weeks to monitor your progress. We check whether teeth are moving as planned and address any concerns. You will also receive your next set of aligners at these visits. If adjustments to the treatment plan are needed, we discuss and implement them while providing continuous support.

Retention Phase

Once active treatment is complete, retainers help maintain your teeth in their new position. Wearing retainers as directed is important, as teeth can naturally shift over time. Retainers are designed to help prevent teeth from moving back towards their original positions. Our team provides continuous support during this maintenance phase to help preserve your new alignment.

Common Orthodontic Issues Invisalign®
Can Help Address

Invisalign® can often address various orthodontic concerns, though suitability depends on individual assessment. This system may be appropriate for many common alignment and bite issues. A consultation helps determine whether Invisalign® is right for your specific concern.

Crowded Teeth

Invisalign® may be suitable for gradually aligning crowded teeth. Custom aligners are designed to shift teeth into better positions, addressing crowding concerns over time.

Gaps Between Teeth

The aligner system may help close gaps and spaces between teeth. Invisalign® can create a more uniform appearance while maintaining healthy spacing for proper oral hygiene.

Overbite

Invisalign® may be suitable for mild to moderate overbite, where upper teeth overlap lower teeth excessively. Treatment plans are customised to help improve bite alignment based on individual assessment.

Underbite

For mild to moderate underbite where lower teeth sit in front of upper teeth, Invisalign® may help improve alignment. Your dentist assesses whether your case is suitable.

Crossbite

Invisalign® may be suitable for addressing crossbite, where some upper teeth sit inside lower teeth when biting. Aligners gradually shift teeth into more appropriate positions to improve bite function.

Open Bite

Where upper and lower teeth do not meet when the mouth is closed, Invisalign® may help address certain open bite cases. Suitability depends on case severity and characteristics.

What to Know About Invisalign® Treatment

Understanding both the advantages and practical considerations of Invisalign® helps you make informed decisions about your orthodontic treatment. Clear aligner therapy offers distinct characteristics that may suit your lifestyle and orthodontic needs. Knowing what to expect helps you prepare for the journey ahead.

Appearance and Discretion

Clear aligners are virtually invisible when worn, providing a discreet approach to teeth straightening. Small tooth-coloured attachments may be needed on some teeth to help achieve certain tooth movements. These attachments are generally subtle but may be noticeable upon close inspection.

Lifestyle Flexibility

The removable nature of aligners allows you to eat your usual foods and maintain your regular brushing and flossing routine. However, successful treatment requires wearing aligners for 20 to 22 hours daily, as compliance directly influences treatment effectiveness.

Comfort Factors

The smooth plastic design eliminates the need for brackets and wires, potentially offering a more comfortable experience than traditional braces. Mild temporary pressure or discomfort may occur when transitioning to each new aligner set as your teeth gradually move into new positions.

Treatment Planning

The 3D visualisation technology allows you to see the expected outcome before beginning treatment. However, actual results depend on consistent aligner wear, individual response to treatment, and following your dentist’s guidance throughout the process.

Appointment Schedule

Invisalign® generally requires fewer clinic visits compared to traditional braces, with check-ups scheduled approximately every six to eight weeks. Regular appointments remain important for monitoring progress, receiving new aligners, and addressing any concerns that arise during treatment.

Treatment Scope

Invisalign® is designed for various alignment and bite issues, particularly mild to moderate cases. However, complex orthodontic problems may be more suitable for traditional braces or combination treatments, which your dentist can discuss during your consultation.

Am I a Candidate for Invisalign®?

Determining whether Invisalign® is right for you involves assessing several factors during your consultation. While the system can address many orthodontic cases, individual suitability varies. An in-person assessment helps identify whether clear aligner treatment aligns with your specific needs and goals.

Invisalign® may be suitable for many common alignment and bite issues. More severe or complex problems might require traditional braces. Your dentist evaluates your case during the consultation.

Healthy teeth and gums are important before starting orthodontic treatment. Dental issues such as cavities or gum disease should be addressed first to create a foundation for successful treatment.

Achieving results requires wearing aligners 20 to 22 hours daily. Treatment success depends on patient compliance. Commitment to following care instructions may indicate good candidature.

Invisalign® is available for adults with complete dental development. Your dentist assesses oral health and alignment concerns during the consultation to determine whether clear aligners are suitable for your circumstances.

Invisalign® Treatment Duration and Cost

Understanding the time and financial investment involved in Invisalign® treatment helps you plan accordingly. Both treatment duration and cost vary based on individual case complexity, orthodontic needs, and personal circumstances. Your consultation provides information specific to your situation.

How Long Does Treatment Take?

Treatment duration with Invisalign® varies based on individual factors. Mild alignment cases may take approximately six to 12 months. Moderate cases often require around 12 to 18 months of active treatment. More complex cases may need 18 to 24 months or longer. Severity of misalignment, consistent aligner wear, and individual response influence duration. During consultation, we provide an estimated timeframe specific to your assessment.

What Does Invisalign® Cost?

Invisalign® treatment starts at  ranges at $3300-$9000 depending on the complexity and number of aligners needed to get the desired outcome. Factors influencing the final investment include the number of aligners required, treatment length, and any preliminary dental work needed. The dentist will be able to provide more accurate pricing after consultation. Payment plan options may be available to help make treatment more manageable. Some private health funds provide orthodontic cover. During consultation, we provide an accurate estimate tailored to your treatment plan.

Caring for Your Invisalign® Aligners

Proper care of your aligners maintains effectiveness and supports your oral health throughout the treatment. Following proper maintenance routines helps keep your aligners clear and hygienic while protecting your teeth and gums.

Clean Aligners Daily

Rinse aligners each time you remove them, and brush gently with a soft toothbrush using lukewarm water. Avoid hot water, which can warp plastic and affect fit.

Maintain Oral Hygiene

Brush and floss thoroughly after every meal before reinserting aligners. This prevents trapping food particles and bacteria between teeth and aligners, which could contribute to dental issues during treatment.

Remove for Eating and Drinking

Remove aligners before eating or drinking anything except water. Food and coloured beverages can stain aligners, and chewing with them may cause damage. Store safely during meals.

Store Safely When Removed

Use the provided protective case whenever aligners are out of your mouth to prevent loss, damage, or contamination. Avoid wrapping in napkins, as they may be accidentally discarded.

Wear as Directed

Wear aligners 20 to 22 hours daily to maintain treatment progress. Consistent compliance directly impacts treatment success and duration. Following the wearing instructions helps achieve more predictable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to common questions about Invisalign® treatment to help you understand what to expect during your orthodontic treatment with clear aligners.
1. Does Invisalign® hurt?

Most patients experience temporary pressure or mild discomfort when wearing a new set of aligners, as this indicates their teeth are gradually moving. This sensation is generally manageable and subsides within a few days.

The smooth plastic material eliminates the sharp edges or irritation sometimes associated with traditional braces. The degree of discomfort is different for each person, and many patients adjust comfortably to the treatment process.

However, it’s important to note that Invisalign® treatment also has risks, including discomfort, gum or tooth sensitivity, possible relapse of tooth position over time, and limitations depending on tooth and jaw alignment. Not all orthodontic problems are suitable for clear aligner treatment. Your dentist will explain the potential risks, benefits, and alternatives before you decide.

2. Can I eat and drink with Invisalign®?

You should remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything except water. This prevents damage to the aligners and staining from coloured foods and beverages.

The removable design of aligners allows you to enjoy your usual diet without restrictions. After eating, brush and floss before reinserting the aligners to maintain oral hygiene throughout treatment.

3. How often do I need to wear my aligners?

Aligners should be worn for approximately 20 to 22 hours per day for treatment to progress as planned. You remove them only for eating, drinking (except water), and oral hygiene.

Consistent wear helps achieve the expected results within the estimated timeframe. Your personalised treatment plan will include specific guidance, as compliance with wearing instructions significantly influences treatment success.

4. Can Invisalign® address severe orthodontic problems?

Invisalign® is designed to address common alignment and bite issues, particularly mild to moderate cases. Severe or complex orthodontic problems may be more suitable for traditional braces or other orthodontic approaches.

During your consultation, we assess your specific situation and discuss whether Invisalign® can achieve your treatment goals or if an alternative approach would be more appropriate.

5. Will I need to wear a retainer after Invisalign®?

Wearing retainers after completing active treatment is important for maintaining results. Teeth can naturally shift over time, and retainers help prevent this movement.

Following your dentist’s guidance about retainer wear helps preserve the alignment you have achieved. Retention is a normal and necessary part of any orthodontic treatment, supporting long-term stability of your results.

6. Can teenagers use Invisalign®?

Invisalign® Teen is specifically designed for teenage patients and includes features such as compliance indicators to help monitor aligner wear. Teenagers whose adult teeth have fully erupted may be suitable candidates.

The system offers a discreet alternative to traditional braces that may appeal to teens concerned about appearance during treatment. A consultation determines whether Invisalign® Teen is appropriate for your teenager’s specific needs.

7. How is Invisalign® different from traditional braces?

Invisalign® uses clear, removable plastic aligners, while traditional braces use metal brackets and wires attached to teeth. Clear aligners are virtually invisible and can be removed for eating and cleaning.

Traditional braces are fixed in place throughout treatment. Invisalign® may require fewer clinic visits, though this varies by case.

Both approaches can effectively address orthodontic concerns, and the choice depends on your specific situation, preferences, and treatment requirements discussed during consultation.

8. What happens if I lose an aligner?

Contact us promptly if you lose an aligner. Depending on your treatment stage, we may advise you to move to the next aligner. In some cases, you may need to return to the previous set temporarily, or we may order a replacement.

Storing aligners in their protective case when not in use helps prevent loss. We provide guidance specific to your situation to minimise any impact on your treatment progress.
