General Dentistry And Preventative Care

General Dentistry and Preventative Care: Most of the signs sent out by our body to indicate the beginning of a problem tend to go unnoticed, leading to unnecessary aggravation of otherwise simple issues. At Glo Dental we recommend regular 6-monthly dental check-ups to help avoid and identify problems earlier, thus enabling timely treatment.

Prevention is always better than treatment.

At your examination appointment at Glo Dental, we will recommend various preventative measures to make sure that your teeth and gums always remain strong and healthy. One way of checking for early signs of decay is by taking regular screening X-Rays of your teeth. At Glo Dental we use Digital X-ray technology which ensures that your radiation exposure is minimal.

Fissure Sealants:

In children and teens, most tooth decay starts in the grooves on the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Fissure sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to these grooves, which protect the chewing surfaces from tooth decay by keeping germs and food particles out of these grooves.

Permanent molars are the most likely to benefit from sealants. The first molars usually come into the mouth when a child is about 6 years old. Second molars appear at about age 12. It is best if the sealant is applied soon after the teeth have erupted, before they have a chance to decay.
The process of applying sealants is quick and easy, without the need for drilling or removing any tooth structure.

Hygiene / Scaling and Polishing with Fluoride treatment:

In this process, plaque and tartar deposits are gently removed from your teeth, leaving the surface of your teeth smooth and clean. Next, some concentrated Fluoride gel is placed inside small, flexible foam trays and these trays are positioned over your teeth for 60 seconds. Fluoride helps to strengthen the enamel of your teeth, and it is advisable not to eat, drink or rinse for at least 20 minutes after the fluoride treatment.

What happens if you don’t get regular scaling and polishing done?

As the deposits of plaque and tartar begin to build up over time, they provide the perfect hub for bacteria to thrive in your mouth. This causes inflammation and bleeding of the gums called Gingivitis and over a period of time, the inflammation also passes to the jaw bone. This condition is known as Periodontitis.  Gingivitis can be reversed, however Periodontitis can be treated to help prevent the condition from getting worse.  The most common symptoms include bad breath, loose teeth, swollen and bleeding gums and mild to extreme pain in the jaw. Periodontitis, if not treated effectively and immediately, can also worsen other diseases such as diabetes and heart disease.
